Musée portuaire de Dunkerque

WELCOME TO THE DUNKIRK HARBOUR MUSEUM! The Port Museum welcomes you to the heart of the historic Citadel district, in a former 19th century tobacco warehouse. Through rich collections spread over three levels and within the spectacular "Musée à flot", embark on a journey to discover the history of the port of Dunkirk from the 17th century to the present day. A visit to the Risban lighthouse, a historic monument located 2 kilometres from the museum, will complete your exploration of the city's maritime and port history, with an unforgettable 360° view of the North Sea and maritime Flanders. Along a unique route with a warm and enveloping atmosphere, you will discover the portrait of the famous privateer Jean Bart, exceptional figureheads, the epic of the great Icelandic fishery, remarkable models of ships, but also picturesque dioramas and surprising panoramic paintings, or a vast technical gallery illustrating the handling trades. Moored at the Citadelle quay, the three-masted ship Duchesse Anne, the largest visitable sailing ship in France, and the fireboat Sandettié, both listed as historical monuments, invite you to extend the adventure by exploring the great era of the sailing navy and the unusual universe of signalling at sea. The barge Guilde, the launch Pilotine 1 and the tug Entreprenant will also evoke the history of the barge industry, maritime pilotage and port towing. During your visit, you will discover the world of the port and how, from Iceland to Cape Horn, from Africa to Asia, the people of Dunkirk have ventured out to all the seas of the world. Welcome to the heart of the history of the 3rd largest port in France! Museum: 10am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 6pm. Closed on Tuesdays except during school holidays. Boats and lighthouse: ask the museum for information. Closed on 1 January, 1 May, 25 December and the day before Shrove Tuesday. Exceptional closure at 4pm on 24 and 31 December.
